Sustainable Community
The Center for Sustainability serves as a hub at Fisher and within the local community for student engagement, educational outreach, and leadership in regional sustainability.
Events
From on-campus events to local, regional, and national happenings, the Center for Sustainability has something for everyone.
Annual events include:
- Campus Crunch, a state-wide celebration of NY state food producers
- Fisher Goes Green, our fall sustainability festival bringing our regional partners to campus
- Sustainability Seminar Series, our spring guest speakers
- Earth Week, the April celebration of the planet
- Fisher Thrift clothing sale, our end of the year chance to reuse
Service and Participation
From planting trees on campus or working with K-12 students in the community, to traveling to support partner efforts, the Center for Sustainability is connecting students with a broad range of experiences.
Sustainability Experience
Fisher students have the opportunity to engage in a for-credit, two-course sustainability experience that pairs students with professionals and organizations in order to support best-practices, outreach, and engagement.
Service Trips
The Center collaborates with Campus Ministry, the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement, and other campus organizations, to provide a variety of service-based opportunities, giving students once in a lifetime experiences.
Past experiences include students assisting with home energy efficiency work in Appalachia, campsite revitalization in the Adirondacks, and hurricane recovery in St. John, Virgin Islands.
EcoReps
The EcoReps program at St. John Fisher University is a peer-education and leadership program that focuses on campus sustainability, with the mission of increasing the environmental literacy of students, faculty, and staff. By serving as EcoReps, students
- gain valuable leadership and management skills
- acquire event planning and outreach skills
- gain a deeper knowledge of sustainability in action
- make a positive impact on our campus and the community
Students in the program are required to participate in a community-engagement experience each semester, allowing them to make a positive impact off-campus as well. EcoReps are led by EcoMentors, upper-level students who execute meetings, generate learning topics, and provide guidance to EcoReps, while also being a liaison for the Center for Sustainability.
