New Leadership Announced for Pharmacy Practice and Administration Department

September 26, 2018

Drs. Elizabeth (Lisa) Phillips and Angela Nagel were recently announced as chair and vice chair, respectively, of the Pharmacy Practice and Administration Department in the Wegmans School of Pharmacy.

Drs. Elizabeth (Lisa) Phillips and Angela Nagel

Phillips joined the School in 2008 and has 30 years of pharmacy practice experience and teaching. She developed an interprofessional collaborative ambulatory care practice, within the Internal Medicine Ambulatory Care clinic, at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. This site serves as a clinical classroom for third and fourth year pharmacy students. Phillips participated in a pilot project, which collected data, reported outcomes and provided evidence to support expansion of the pharmacist scope of practice in New York State. As a result, the pharmacist’s scope of practice has been expanded to authorize collaborative drug therapy management (CDTM) privileges. She is currently serving in her eighth year as residency program director for the ASHP-accredited post-graduate year 2 (PGY-2) residency in ambulatory care, which is a joint collaboration and sponsorship between the School of Pharmacy and Upstate Medical University.

Phillips is an active member of state and local professional organizations. She currently serves as past president of the Central New York Society of Health Systems Pharmacists, as board member of the Research and Education Foundation of New York State Health Systems Pharmacists (REF-NYSCHP) and is active in the state wide Association of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP). She has been an invited speaker for several statewide organizations providing education on topics of diabetes, anticoagulation, and CDTM. Phillips is a past board member of the National Board of Anticoagulation Care Providers, she serves as an exam writer for the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties and reviewer for Ambulatory Care Self-Assessment Program of American College of Clinical Pharmacy. She is Board Accredited in Applied Pharmacology, Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacists (BCACP), and Board Certified Anticoagulation Care Provider (CACP).

As chair, Phillips will oversee all activities within the department, engage in the development and expansion of clinical partnerships and collaborations with external practice sites, mentor faculty, and serve on the School’s executive leadership team. Phillips’ strategic initiatives for the department and school are to continue to foster excellence in teaching, preparing students to be patient-centered, practice ready stewards of the profession, and faculty who continue to be leaders and innovators of the profession.

Nagel joined the School in 2009 and has 19 years of pharmacy practice experience and teaching. She was a clinical pharmacist at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s (URMC) Strong Memorial Hospital and Golisano Children’s Hospital prior to joining the College. She currently maintains a clinical practice site at Culver Medical Group, a medicine/pediatric physician resident practice. She is an active member of the Fisher community including service on the faculty statues revisions committee, strategic planning committee, and Middle States Self-Study. She will assume administrative responsibilities related to curriculum, faculty development and strategic planning in her new position. She will continue to serve as a faculty advisor for the Student Society of Health-System Pharmacist (SSHP).

She has been an active member of the Rochester Area Society of Health Systems Pharmacists, serving as a board member in various positions. She has also been involved in several committees within the New York State Council of Hospital Pharmacists. Nagel serves as a resident poster mentor and CV reviewer for ASHP, and the American Pharmacist Association (APhA) as a local level case writer for the annual patient counseling competition. She is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) and Board Certified-Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM).

Phillips and Nagel bring complementary experiences and a history of collaboration which are foundational for faculty and students to rise to the challenges of and define the future of pharmacy practice.
