October Brings Events, Activities for Pharmacists’ Month

October 8, 2018

The Wegmans School of Pharmacy will join pharmacists across the country in recognizing October as American Pharmacists’ Month. Designed by the American Pharmacists’ Association, the month is an opportunity to educate the public about the role of pharmacists as members of the health care team, and celebrate the profession.

Wegmans School of Pharmacy Students kick off American Pharmacists' Month with the help of the Cardinal.

At Fisher, more than two dozen events will bring guest speakers to campus, and see the School of Pharmacy community engage in service activities and events. The month kicked off on Monday, Oct. 1, with a lecture by Dr. Daniel Hussar, who spent more than 50 years at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Hussar addressed the School of Pharmacy community, discussing the future of the profession and the challenges pharmacists face today.

Pharmacy students are also participating in a “Flat Cardinal” social media campaign and video competition, developing short videos about what pharmacy means to them.

The School will host three flu immunization clinics on Tuesday, Oct. 16 (Room 129), Thursday, Oct. 25 (Room 133), and Tuesday, Oct. 30 (Room 129), in partnership with pharmacists from Wegmans.

The School will also host a Drug Take Back event in collaboration with the Monroe County Sherriff’s Department from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Campus Center Atrium.  The event is open to all faculty, staff, and students. Pharmacy faculty and students will be on hand to provide education on the importance of proper disposal of unused and unwanted medications.

Finally, from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, in Cleary Auditorium, Dr. Mike Mendoza, commissioner of public health for Monroe Country, will deliver a talk during the Dean’s Hour, which will conclude the month with a cake celebration. Mendoza’s talk is open to the campus community.
