Senior Service Scholars Prepare for Final Year of Service

September 24, 2018

On Sunday, Sept. 9, the senior Service Scholars held their senior retreat, a requirement of the Service Scholarship, in which students complete significant community service hours at high-need, social justice oriented non-profit organizations across Rochester.

Service Scholars commit to weekly volunteer work at the same site for an entire year, and are currently serving the Ronald McDonald House, Strong and Highland hospitals, Lollypop Farms, and Pencils and Paper in the Emma Beechwood neighborhood, among many other organizations.

This year the senior retreat was held at Mendon Ponds Park, where the group toured Wild Wings Nature Preserve and considered it as a future service site and canoed with the help of the Fisher Outdoors Club. The group then headed to the Devil’s Bathtub Shelter to reflect on three years of completed service and to set goals for their final year.

On hand among the 20 or so scholars were Liz Rizzollo, administrative director of the program; Jill Swiencicki, academic advisor to the Service Scholars, and Deb Vanderbilt, former academic adviser and current Advisory Board member.
