St. John Fisher College Hosts TEDxSJFC for Second Year
On Saturday, Nov. 3, St. John Fisher College will host TEDxSJFC from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Basil 135.
Among the speakers will be Fisher faculty, students, staff, and alumni. Each talk will center on the theme, Beyond the Boundary. According to organizers, the topics were chosen to design a balanced event.
The event is free, but space is limited. The registration process is now available online. Leading up to the event, organizers will release one speaker’s name each day on Facebook along with information about their topic.
A week before the event, people who registered will receive a confirmation email in which they will be given more information related to the different sessions such as speaker lists and more.
Fisher’s Honors program is sponsoring the operation to bring TEDxSJFC back to campus for the second year in a row. During the summer, the TEDxSJFC team came up the theme, Beyond the Boundary, which could be open to interpretation and take attendees beyond social norms of society. This year’s talks include women’s representation in coaching, the power of a person’s name, youth activism, and sustained dialogue.
Fisher’s first TEDxSJFC took place last year and was centered on the theme Reveal the Invisible. Julia Detmer ’20, who led TEDxSJFC’s planning this year, said the team is more organized and has more knowledge about how the process works, including a better understanding of how to select speakers. She is excited to bring the TED philosophy of “spreading ideas” back to campus.
“It’s a good thing to bring to [Fisher] and the Rochester community,” said Detmer.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
About TED

TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Monica Lewinsky, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala,Sal Khan, and Daniel Kahneman.
TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; the annual million-dollar TED Prize, which funds exceptional individuals with a "wish," or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx, which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
