Campus Encouraged to “Turn It In” During Great American Smoke Out Week

November 13, 2019

As part of Fisher’s efforts toward a smoke/tobacco/vape-free campus beginning January 1, 2020, the College’s Smoke Free Task Force will hold a “Turn It In” event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Campus Center Atrium.

Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to turn in their vape and e-cigarette pens and cartridges during the event, and will be entered to win a prize if they do.

“The ‘Turn It In’ event was developed due to the recent awareness and uncertainty of cause for reported vaping injuries and deaths, changes in legislation regarding age restrictions of vaping products, and the general concern for the well-being of our entire Fisher community - students, faculty, and staff,” said Al Camp, fire and life safety officer and member of the Smoke Free Task Force.

Earlier this semester, the College announced its new smoke/tobacco/vape-free campus policy, which prohibits smoking, including e-cigarettes and vaping devices, in all College buildings and campus grounds, including College-owned vehicles beginning January 1, 2020.

The policy was developed in response to a Student Government Association proposal brought forth by the Student Nurses Association and ongoing campus-wide discussions, as well as a survey that assessed support for the policy’s implementation. The work was conducted over the course of a year, and the survey results were largely in favor of a smoke-free campus.
