Alumnus Dan Kane Honored with 2018 Drake Hero Award
Dan Kane, an investigative journalist at The News & Observer of Raleigh, North Carolina, was recently honored by The Drake Group, an organization committed to defending academic integrity in higher education. Kane was honored as the 2018 recipient of the Drake Hero Award, given during the group’s Awards Luncheon on Friday, April 13.
According to the Drake Group, the Hero Award was established to honor an individual who has helped advance the collegiate sports reform movement. A press release announcing the award noted that “Dan, through his tireless commitment to quality investigative journalism, specifically his reporting on the long running athletic academic fraud scandal at the University of North Carolina, has been unafraid to tell the truth and report the facts in all matters he covers, making him a very deserving recipient of this award.”
In the announcement, Drake Group President B. David Ridpath, went on to praise Kane for his reporting. “His efforts are a real credit to investigative journalism and freedom of the press. He is certainly deserving of this recognition,” he said.
