LEAD #LikeAGirl Events Focus on Women in Leadership, Female Empowerment
March 28, 2018
Two student organizations at St. John Fisher College—student-run agency, The PRIMA Group, and the Tom Proietti Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)—commemorated Women’s History Month through the third annual LEAD #LikeAGirl Women in Leadership series.
The 2018 program offered a leadership training session for students hosted by Patty Phillips ’85, president of Clarity Recruiting and Career Management, Inc. She has focused part of her coaching services on helping recent college graduates and young professionals in the early stages of their careers. Phillips’ workshop included an interactive presentation, group prompts, as well as discussion and reflection surrounding leadership skills. Fifteen participants attended, including undergraduates, graduate students, and a recent alumna.
The ‘Leading Like Susan B.’ power panel featured Kim Allen, Dixon Schwabl; Rose Ann Cooper, Martino Flynn; Rachel Barnhart, Rochester For All; and Victoria Brzustowicz, The National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House. The panel discussion touched on leadership styles, experiences and mindset, the current landscape of women’s leadership, finding work-life balance, and advice for young women. Over 25 guests attended, including area practitioners and college professors, several St. John Fisher College alumni, and current students.
“LEAD #LikeAGirl is an important event to prepare young female professionals to excel in college and the workplace as we enter industries where gender inequality still exists,” said Allie Rudy, president of PRSSA. “The leadership series recognizes and celebrates our strengths as women, and allows us to learn from the accomplishments of admirable speakers and the rich history of female leadership right here in Rochester.”
LEAD #LikeAGirl was created by alumnae Alexandra Hristodoulou ’17 and Rachael Zalewski ’17, with the help of adviser and professor Arien Rozelle, to empower students interested in media and communication fields by providing them with the skills to exercise active leadership and celebrate personal and professional strengths.
