From published research to community awards, Fisher faculty, staff, students, and alumni began 2018 strong with more headlines. Here’s a roundup of their latest successes and achievements.

Academic Scholarship

A research article co-authored by Dr. Thomas Tyson was selected for the 2017 Robert W. Gibson Manuscript Award, given by the Accounting History Special Interest Group of the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand and editorial board members of Accounting History. In January, Dr. Tim Madigan delivered a presentation at Siena College on “Frankenstein Today” to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s novel. In November 2017, Madigan also delivered the George Ross Memorial Lecture on philosopher Bertrand Russell. The talk was part of an event sponsored by Philosophy Now, Philosophy For All, the Bertrand Russell Society, and the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation. Read more…

An article written by Dr. Susan Schultz, Leveraging Social Media, was recently featured on the Organization for Autism Research website. The article offers social media best practices for students heading off to college. Read more…

A psychology-based service-learning project created by Drs. Kimberly J. McClure Brenchley and Lynn Donahue won the international Action Teaching Award. Given by the Social Psychology Network, their project rose above a pool of 20 entries from three countries and 13 U.S. states, and was recognized as a “model proposal.” Read more…

Appointments

Dr. Thomas C. Priester, a 2012 graduate of the Ed.D. program, was named associate dean of the Wyoming County Campus centers by Genesee Community College (GCC). According to a GCC press release, Priester has served as interim dean since summer 2017. Read more…

Fisher graduate Erin Land ’99 was appointed director of elementary education for the Webster Central School District, effective July 1. In her 18 years in the district, Land has held several leadership positions, most recently principal of Klem Road Elementary School. Read more…

Highlights

Erin Dorney, a 2006 graduate of St. John Fisher College, recently published a collection of poems, I Am Not Famous Anymore. The collection includes erasure poems sourced from media interviews given by actor Shia LaBeouf. The book will be available in June 2018. Read more…

Mike McCarthy, past director of the Office of Safety and Security and a 2002 graduate of the master’s in Human Resource Management program at the School of Business, will be the grand marshal of the Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Read more…

Drs. Arlette Miller Smith and Patricia Tweet were featured in an article in the Democrat and Chronicle about their work organizing the film and discussion series, “If Loving You Is Wrong.” Read more…

Jeannine Dingus-Eason was a guest on the local Soulstainable Living radio program, discussing her research on black mothers of children with autism. Dingus-Eason is an associate professor and program director of the executive leadership doctoral program. Read more…

Jeremy Sarachan, associate professor and chair of the Department of Media and Communication, had his short play, “Still Cheese Runs Deep,” performed at the 2 Pages/2 Voices 2018 playwriting competition sponsored by Geva Theatre Center and Writers and Books. Read more…

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, the Department of Mathematical and Computing Sciences hosted high school students from various schools to compete in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC), an exam sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. Read more…
