Service Scholar Organizes Drive for Puerto Ricans in Rochester

St. John Fisher College student Joseph Reyes ’19 believes in doing the right thing. As a Service Scholar, he’s logged dozens of hours volunteering his time to local community agencies. But, when Hurricane Maria caused devastation in Puerto Rico, leaving thousands without their homes and basic items essential for living, community service took a deeper, more personal meaning for him.

With family and relatives living on the island, he understood that even months later, Puerto Ricans are still in need. And, Reyes learned that many are leaving Puerto Rico and making Rochester their new home. At the front line of support here is the Ibero American Action League, which is providing employment, health care, housing, and other services and resources for Puerto Ricans relocating to Rochester. To help their efforts, Reyes has organized a donation drive for campus and community members.

Throughout the week of April 4 through April 13, members of the College community can bring items to one of three donation boxes located at the Security Office (Haffey Hall), Basil/Pioch Corridor, and Lavery Library.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, community members are welcome to bring items to the Security Office, located in Haffey Hall.

Items of most need include personal hygiene products, diapers, wipes, towels, blankets, car seats, boots, gloves, scarves, and hats.

Following the drive, Reyes plans to continue volunteering with Ibero, working at their resource center for Hurricane Maria families.
