Four Ways to Make Fisher Home
This year, St. John Fisher College’s Orientation theme is “Welcome Home” and Fisher students are excited to meet the members of the Class of 2023.
Leah Jasek ’20 has helped welcome new students to campus as a Student Orientation Coordinator and veteran Move-In Day volunteer. A senior from Grand Island, New York, she remembers the nervous excitement that came with the college transition. And, she’s made the most of her time at Fisher as a member of the Residence Hall Association, a Great Beginnings Ambassador, Peer Mentor, and Teddi Dance for Love member.
Here, she offers four pieces of advice for first-year students on how to make Fisher their home.
Be Yourself and Be Open
Be ready to put yourself out there but also merge into Fisher in a fun, busy, and COMFORTABLE way! Go to as many events as you can, especially PlayFair! It is a fun event where you will meet a ton of people in an active and silly way!
Pursue Your Passion
Find one thing that you have a love and passion for, whether it is a sport, your major, or a club. Fisher has given me so much, but the best thing is the love and passion it has started in me to help others feel comfortable and working with kids.
Attend Events and Activities
In the fall semester, visit the Involvement Fest. All the clubs explain what they are about, when they meet, and how to join. It is a wonderful opportunity to sign up while getting a ton of free Fisher gear!
Stay up for the Late Night Breakfast, a free breakfast thrown by the Residence Hall Association that occurs the week before finals. It involves fun games, great prizes, and is an awesome way to distract yourself from studying (in a good way) right before exams.
Grab a few friends and go cheer on the Cardinals during a sporting event. Everyone stops by the games and they are perfect casual events to meet new people and get to know the ones you come with better!
Find a Friendly Face
I think it is super important that students remember that while this is a big transition, everyone is in the same place! There are a lot emotions and changes that first weekend, and as a peer mentor, I try to be a familiar face who can make all freshmen feel at home. Our Orientation Team members have all been in your shoes, and we are ready and want to help you as much as we can!
