How to Access Online CITI Training Courses

Directions on how to access CITI for Conflict of Interest and Responsible Conduct of Research training courses.

Conflict of Interest Training

Faculty and staff serving as key personnel on any grant at St. John Fisher University must receive instruction in Conflict of Interest. This training can be completed through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI), which provides convenient and comprehensive online training modules.

Please note that Conflict of Interest certification is valid for four years.

How to Register for a CITI Account

  1. Go to the CITI website.
  2. Click "Register" at the top of the page.
  3. Under "Select Your Organization Affiliation," enter "St. John Fisher College."
  4. Follow the directions on the screen to Add a Course and register for the Conflicts of Interest course (Question 4).

If You Already Have a CITI Account

  1. Log into the CITI website.
  2. Follow the directions on the screen to Add a Course and register for the Conflicts of Interest course (Question 4).

Logistics

  • You do not have to register in advance and can access the course 24 hours a day.
  • There are two required modules and two supplementary modules.
  • Each module can be printed out if desired.

Course Completion

You must take the brief quizzes at the end of each module and get a score of 80% on each module to pass the course. If you don't pass the first time, you can retake each quiz until you earn a passing score.

After you have completed the requirements above, you can print out a course completion report (see below). The OSPFR does not keep your certification on file, but your record of completion is available indefinitely for you to access online through the CITI website.

The CITI Program issues "Completion Reports" (CRs) for every course completed by a learner. CRs are akin to transcripts and show the score for each module within a specific course. Learn more about CITI transcripts and completion reports.

Responsible Conduct of Research Instruction

Students who receive support through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or the National Science Foundation (NSF) must receive instruction in responsible conduct of research (RCR). It is highly recommended that faculty members complete the training as well.

To satisfy NSF requirements, RCR instruction can be completed through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI), which provides convenient and comprehensive online training modules.

NIH guidelines require students to receive substantive face-to-face instruction in RCR, with a preference for a series of programs or seminars rather than a one-day class or workshop. While the online RCR course will help satisfy NIH guidelines, online modules must be coupled with at least eight hours of face-to-face instruction.

Please note that RCR certification is valid for a maximum of three years.
