Francisco Plata graduated in Spanish philology from his native Granada, Spain. He was a lecturer of Spanish in Orel, Russia, and later pursued graduate studies in New Mexico and Texas, where he received his Ph.D.
He is the author of two novels and a book of poetry. He has also published essays, stories, and poems in a variety of national and international journals, literary magazines, newspapers, and collective works.
He has taught at St. John Fisher College since 2009.
