Cunningham’s research has largely focused on birds and their sense of smell. He has conducted studies on penguins and other seabirds, passerines (songbirds), flamingoes, raptors, and nocturnal birds. His research has taken him to the sub-Antarctic, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Hawaii, South Africa, and throughout New York State. Cunningham has also investigated how odors can be used in conservation.

His research has been published in journals including Antarctic Science, Journal of Avian Biology, and the Journal of Experimental Biology, and he has given numerous talks and lectures throughout the country.
