Founded in 1905, the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America is one of the oldest and largest organizations for Italian Americans. Deeply rooted in faith, family, and patriotism, the organization celebrates and preserves the Italian language, traditions, and cultural pride across generations.

Plutino-Calabrese has dedicated her time, as well as her deep-rooted commitment to culture, language, and travel to the field of global education and specifically to growing Fisher’s student participation in the study abroad program through the years.

“My background continues to guide me in helping students connect across cultures and understand global perspectives,” she said. “I am grateful for the position I have, but I will never forget those who came before me and made sacrifices to change the future for Italian Americans. I’m humbled by their strength and resilience in the face of a world that was often unkind to them. I have always, and will continue to, emphasize the importance of this sacrifice through my teachings and my work.”

When asked how her Italian heritage has shaped her identity and the work she does, Plutino-Calabrese made it clear that the history of Italian Americans serves as a constant source of motivation, driving her to continue paving the way for future generations while honoring and remembering those who began that journey before her.

“I am proud and humbled to receive this award from such a distinguished organization,” she said. “Their work aligns perfectly with my mission—to ensure that the legacy of our ancestors continues to shine brightly for generations to come. Mille grazie e grazie a tutti.”
