Fisher to Offer AP Summer Institute to Area Teachers

St. John Fisher University will host the Advanced Placement (AP) Summer Institute this July, giving area teachers the opportunity to learn best practices in teaching AP-level courses in their respective districts.

A professional development program for new and experienced teachers, the AP Summer Institute provides teachers with new strategies and methods to improve their instruction and increase student-learning outcomes. The course will run from July 17 through July 20, at the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education.

The College Board-endorsed Institute includes in-depth training in AP courses and teaching strategies, led by a College Board-endorsed consultant. Teachers will receive digital materials, including course outlines; content-related handouts; and student samples, scoring guidelines, and commentary for the most recent AP Exam free-response questions. Courses are available in subjects including English literature and composition, English language and composition, U.S. history, world history, calculus, statistics, and biology.

The AP Summer Institute introduces teachers with syllabi, curriculum materials, and strategies used by AP teachers across the country, and helps them develop a plan to manage the sequence and timing of their classes. The Institute also covers the AP examination and reading process and provides opportunities for networking among area teachers.

Completion of course will earn participants 30 professional development hours. The cost of attendance for non-science courses are $825; the chemistry and biology courses carry an additional $25 lab fee.
