DePeters Family Center Welcomes New Faculty Fellows

April 30, 2025

Three faculty members have joined the DePeters Family Center for Innovation and Teaching Excellence through its Faculty Fellows program.

Maylin Harter, Stephen West, Zach Murphy

Maylin Harter, visiting instructor in the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education, was selected to serve as the core director, supporting the Fisher Core across the undergraduate curriculum through the lens of the Fisher Outcomes, with a particular focus on student learning, curricula exploration, and faculty development.

Stephen West, visiting assistant professor in the School of Arts and Sciences, is serving as the writing fellow, working alongside Harter on faculty development addressing the understanding of the Fisher Outcomes of written/oral/visual communication and inquiry. He will have a specific focus on writing-across-the-curriculum in 1299, 2200, and 3990 courses.

Harter and West bring to these critical positions extensive experience with curriculum development, writing instruction, and assessment.

Dr. Zach Murphy, assistant professor of biology in the School of Arts and Sciences, has been selected as the new active learning faculty fellow. Over the next two years, he will partner with the DePeters Center to continue the work started by Dr. Emily Dane-Staples to support and advance active learning practices across campus.

Murphy brings a strong foundation in active learning to this role, having completed extensive professional development in this area and successful integration of these strategies into his own teaching. In addition to transforming his courses, he has played a key role in helping his department transition Anatomy and Physiology I to a team-based active learning course, leading to improved engagement and student success.
