Countdown to Commencement 2026: Luka Hakkila

March 30, 2026

This week’s “Countdown to Commencement” series features Luka Hakkila, a graduate student in Fisher’s mental health counseling program, nominated by Dr. Rob Rice, a professor and chair of the mental health counseling program in the Wegmans School of Nursing.

Hakkila felt an immediate connection to Fisher’s program from the moment they applied and interviewed, one that affirmed they were exactly where they needed to be.

Hakkila has cherished the deep bonds formed within their cohort. Sharing courses, challenges, and new experiences has created a supportive community that has grown together and prepared collectively for the realities of professional practice.

Several courses and faculty members have left a lasting impression, especially Group Counseling with Dr. Scott McGuiness, Dr. Elizabeth Shannon, and Dr. Denise Curlee. Their passion, expertise, and commitment have shaped Hakkila’s experience in meaningful and memorable ways.

At their current internship site, Hakkila has had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients, an experience they hope to continue after graduation.

“I want to be a safe person for people of all backgrounds,” Hakkila shares. “Fisher has taught me that there is a place for me in the professional world, and mental health counseling is a really good fit for me.”

Rice sees that same strength reflected in Hakkila’s work. “Luka is an exceptionally competent and open-minded counselor who thrives in diverse settings,” he says, noting their respect for each individual’s unique journey.
