Countdown to Commencement 2026: Shawni Hagan
This week’s featured student in the “Countdown to Commencement” series is Shawni Hagan, a psychology major nominated by Megan Walker, CSTEP/TRIO SSS advisor.
Hagan first discovered Fisher through College Bound, a program that invites first‑generation students to the Fisher campus for a week each summer to learn about the college process. She was drawn to Fisher’s strong psychology program, and the Psychology Spend‑a‑Day experience for accepted students introduced her to the warm, supportive faculty who would later shape her academic journey.
One of the highlights of Hagan’s Fisher experience was studying abroad in Kyoto, Japan. She lived with a local host family and immersed herself fully in the culture and in her coursework. These classes, and the relationships she built, deepened her appreciation for Japanese culture and strengthened her bond with her host family.
“I wouldn’t trade that experience for the world. Everyone should do it, I feel like you learn so much,” Hagan said.
Serving as a resident assistant has also been one of her most impactful roles. Through the position, she has learned more about herself and others, finding meaning in the responsibility and the relationships she has built.
Hagan also describes her involvement in Fisher Feminist Alliance as her “passion project.” While the organization has been a source of fun and community‑building, it also challenged her to think critically about why feminism matters and how students can create meaningful change.
Walker praises Hagan for her compassion, leadership, and commitment to advocacy. “Shawni is passionate about making Fisher a welcoming place for all students. She uses her voice to drive positive change across campus,” Walker said.
After graduation, Hagan hopes to spend more time abroad in Ireland. She plans to pursue her license in mental health counseling, with a focus on children and family counseling.
