Newcomb is enjoying all the knowledge and skills she is gaining at the Rochester-based company, known for its mission to “Make a Difference” and its workplace culture, and she is experiencing the difference firsthand.

“Everyone always talks about how great the culture at Wegmans is, and it truly is unique. There is a collaborative spirit instilled in everything we do, and my department feels like its own little community. It was a very welcoming environment to join, and I think it’s making me a better coworker overall,” she said. “The work we do in the Employee Communications and Engagement Department is felt across the whole company. I can really see the impact my individual effort will have on our organization on a large scale.”

In her role, she works primarily with video content that is then used to communicate with employees. While she went in with some experience, she was excited to “get behind a camera” and learn more about all that goes into production. The department’s work reaches more than 50,000 employees across the country, and she is learning that maintaining company culture across so many demographics is both vital and what she calls an “exciting challenge.”

Newcomb is a marketing major with plans to obtain a public and professional writing certificate upon graduation, as her passion lies with advertising and brand storytelling.

“At a company like Wegmans, part of the reason their external communications are so strong is because their internal communications are highly prioritized. Our customers believe what we say because our employees believe it too and live our values every day,” she said. “Internal communications is a really interesting niche that isn’t necessarily taught in classes, but it’s so important to business function and effective storytelling, both of which I care about deeply.”

For her part, Newcomb feels grateful that she was able to have this opportunity and encourages her peers to pursue these types of unique experiences.

“I’ve worked hard to take advantage of all the connections and opportunities we have here at Fisher so that my learning goes beyond the classroom and prepares me for my future full-time job. I think that having a variety of internship/co-op experiences has helped me feel confident in my skills and what I can do upon graduation,” she said.
