#Fisher2019: Fisher Nurse Finds New Home in Cardiac Unit

July 16, 2019

After four years at St. John Fisher College, Brooklyn, New York, native Maria Robles ’19 is officially calling Rochester home.

Maria Robles poses in her commencement attire in front of Kearney Hall.

Robles minored in Spanish for the health professions in addition to majoring in nursing. This summer, she used the knowledge and skills taught in the classroom to pass the National Council Licensure Examination, and earned a position in the Cardiac Step - Down Unit at URMC-Strong Memorial Hospital. Robles says the community of professors and resources at the Wegmans School of Nursing prepared her for life after Fisher.

“I believe every professor in the School helped me grow into a more confident and hardworking individual,” she says. “Having clinical experience and simulations helped me improve a lot whether it was hands-on with the mannequin or simply observing procedures in the hospital.”

For Robles, earning a bachelor’s degree is just the start of her academic journey, and she sees advanced degrees on the horizon.

“I would hope to either be in graduate school or just have graduated because I do want to continue building my nursing knowledge and maybe become a nurse practitioner or nurse manager,” she says.
