Dr. Hoffman is a conservation biologist and herpetologist, and his research focuses on better understanding the spatial ecology of wildlife, especially amphibians and reptiles, to help conserve them. He is passionate about the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems and works closely with students to give them meaningful research and outreach experiences where they contribute actively to conservation initiatives.
His current projects include an ongoing study of local wetland-breeding amphibians to better understand their tolerance to habitat changes caused by humans and using passive camera trap technology to better detect rare and declining reptiles, primarily massasauga rattlesnakes. He is also involved in local habitat restoration initiatives and works to restore the globally rare oak opening habitats that are unique to our campus.
