Cavanaugh Reading Series Features Author Debbie Urbanski

October 30, 2026

Syracuse-based writer and author Debbie Urbanski will deliver the Fall 2026 Cavanaugh Reading Series at St. John Fisher University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4. The lecture will be held in Basil Hall Auditorium.

Urbanski will be reading from her books “After World” and “Portalmania”. Her work combines science fiction, environmental writing, dystopia, and more.

Her climate AI novel, “After World”, was named a best book of the year by the San Francisco Chronicle, Engadget, Strange Horizons, Booklist, and the Los Angeles Times. “Portalmania,” her collection of stories, was named best horror book of the year by New York Public Library.

The annual reading series was named in honor of the English Department’s friend and former colleague, Fr. John R. Cavanaugh. At the time of his passing in 2007, Fr. Cavanaugh had been associated with Fisher for more than 50 years, including more than 30 years as a member of the English Department.

Free and open to the public, the lecture is sponsored by the English Department and the School of Arts and Sciences.
