The sun was shining, the students were smiling, and the refrigerators were plentiful. This Labor Day weekend, St. John Fisher University welcomed its newest students to campus for move-in day and Orientation.
The incoming first-year class, comprised of 617 students, was selected from the largest applicant pool in University history. The academic quality and diversity of the class is consistent with Fisher’s historic high, and this is the 10th consecutive year of more than 600 first-year students choosing Fisher.
Outside of New York, members of the class arrived on Saturday, Sept. 5 from 20 different states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, and from distances including California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado, marking the second highest number of out-of-state students to the University. The top academic majors of interest are nursing, finance, sport management, biology, pharmaceutical studies, and management.
“We are excited to welcome our newest students to Fisher. Each brings unique talents, perspectives, and aspirations, and we look forward to seeing them thrive and the impact their gifts and talents will make across our campus community,” said Dr. Gerard J. Rooney, president.
Returning students serving on the Orientation Team had plenty of advice for the newest Cardinals.
Dan Ulmer, a sophomore from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, encourages students to get involved, and “most importantly, join Teddi!”
Advice from returning sophomore Chelsea Lynch from Syracuse? “Talk to everybody and join everything!”
Nicole Merry, from Arkport, New York and member of the Class of 2029, said to look for friends everywhere. “You never know where you will meet your best friends.”
Senior Dani Cirillo from Long Island can’t believe this is her final year. “I would tell first-year students to not be afraid to join anything and everything that interests them, and to make it the best year they possibly can.”
On Monday, Sept. 7, transfer students will arrive for their Orientation and returning residential students will also move into the residence halls ahead of the first day of classes on Tuesday.
