Fisher Celebrates 10 Years as a “College of Distinction”
National Guide Honors Institutions with a Student-Centered Approach to Undergraduate Education
For 10 consecutive years, St. John Fisher University has earned recognition as a College of Distinction, a prestigious designation awarded to schools whose commitment to engaged, experiential education sets them apart.
Fisher was named to the 2025-2026 list, recognizing its delivery of a high-quality undergraduate education that focuses on hands-on learning, strong student-faculty relationships, a vibrant campus life, and successful student outcomes.
“This recognition speaks to our dedication to creating a student-centered learning and living environment—a mission that has guided our work since the University’s founding,” said Dr. Gerard J. Rooney, president of the University. “We are proud to have been named a College of Distinction each year for the last decade, and are committed to continuing providing students with robust academic experiences that foster their personal growth, and prepare them for lives of purposeful leadership.”
Since its founding in 2000, Colleges of Distinction has been committed to recognizing schools across the United States for their exceptional contributions to higher education. It evaluates institutions through unique criteria known as the Four Distinctions: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community, and successful outcomes. Through extensive research and interviews, Colleges of Distinction identifies institutions that make a meaningful impact on students’ lives. Inclusion on the list acknowledges Fisher’s demonstrated performance in each of these areas, ensuring a supportive and enriching environment that equips students for future academic and career success.
“Fisher has crafted a campus culture where students are empowered to take ownership of their learning,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer at Colleges of Distinction. “Its programs reflect the kind of innovation and intentionality that prepare students for life after graduation.”
In addition to earning the honor of a College of Distinction, Fisher received specialized recognition among institutions in New York and among private institutions. The University was also praised for its business, education, and nursing programs, as well as its career development initiatives. These accolades were borne out of a need for curricula that are comprehensive not only in course material, but also in practical- and soft-skills development. According to Colleges of Distinction, Fisher has met these needs with a blend of liberal arts education, program-specific training, and abundant opportunities for real-world, experiential learning.
