Internships and Activities
Majors in the media and communication program or public relations program will find a variety of internship opportunities in the Rochester area and beyond.
The demand for Fisher interns is consistently high, and there is a wide array of quality positions to choose from. Although major Rochester media organizations routinely sponsor Fisher students, you also may opt to pursue an internship at a national media outlet in the summer or virtually during the academic year. You may also choose to combine study abroad with a media and communication internship.
As an intern, you can work at public relations and marketing firms, Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, network and public television stations, production houses, and web design companies.
No matter where your media interests lie, you’ll find several options to participate in and contribute to Fisher’s student-run media organizations.
The PRIMA Group
If you are interested in public relations, advertising, and marketing, join PRIMA, Fisher's student-run agency. Clients include Rochester-area non-profits, small businesses, and government agencies. Account executives, strategists, writers, photographers, social media experts, designers, and analysts are needed to support the agency's client portfolio.
Cardinal Television offers the opportunity to produce shows for the web and cable. You may pursue an on-air role, or elect to take on behind-the-scenes responsibilities, including producer, director, floor manager, writer, editor, and control room operator. Programming can be viewed in homes throughout the Rochester area on public access cable. Shows are also posted to our LiveStream and YouTube channels.
The Cardinal Courier provides the means for students to work as professional journalists. Positions with the University's online news organization focus on writing, social media, photography, and video. This campus publication has been recognized for excellence with several awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and the New York Press Association. The Cardinal Courier App is available on the iOS and Android stores.
Students may receive credit for participation in any of these organizations.
Specialized study abroad programs may include filmmaking in Prague or marketing and public relations study in Italy. Once you are in the program, you also may decide to take advantage of the University's Washington Semester or conduct work/study in the heart of the entertainment industry through Fisher’s affiliation with Syracuse University's semester in Los Angeles.
The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) allows students to learn more about the PR profession through networking and professional development. Gain access to regional and international conferences, where you can learn about the latest innovations in the field and begin building your network of contacts.
