Transfer Guidelines for Current Students

Credit Transfer Process for Current Students

If you plan to take a course at another institution, please follow these steps:

  1. Check your academic transcript in Fish’R’Net to verify that you:
    • Have not reached the maximum number of transferable credits (66 credits from a combination of examination sources such as CLEP, AP, IB, and 2-year institutions).
    • Will not violate the college residency requirement. (Residency requirement: You must complete a minimum of 30 credits at SJF including half of the credits required in your major. In addition, 30 of your last 36 credits must be taken at SJF.)
    • Are not repeating a course. Pay particular attention to course subjects and numbers and remember that letters following a course number are unique to Fisher. Ex: SOC 101 at MCC is the same course as Fisher’s SOCI 101D.
  2. Discuss the applicability of all transfer courses to your degree requirements with your advisor before registering for any course.
  3. Complete the Transfer Credit Equivalency Request form. The directions for completing the form should be followed carefully before submitting the form to the Registrar’s Office for processing. Note: Be sure to complete all requested information, including your expected date of graduation.

Note: You cannot transfer credit in a foreign language at the 101 level if you have successfully completed four years of that same language in high school (Level IV). In addition, after successfully completing language coursework at one level, you may not take a lower-level course in that same language.

General Guidelines for Transfer of Coursework

  • Courses must be taken at a regionally accredited school, college, or university.
  • Credit is given for course content only once. It is the student’s responsibility not to duplicate the content by taking the equivalent course. Questions about the applicability of transfer courses to major requirements should be directed to the Department Chair.
  • A grade of C (2.0) or higher must be earned in the course to be considered for transfer.
  • Grades do not transfer and are not included in the St. John Fisher University cumulative GPA.
  • The amount of credit awarded will be based on the official transcript and calculated in semester credit hours. If the transfer institution awarded credit in quarter hours, the hours will be converted to semester credit hours at the time of transfer. Quarter hours are converted by multiplying the quarter hours by 2/3 (4.5 quarter hours equals 3 semester credit hours).
  • For new students, transfer credit is entered on the St. John Fisher University transcript when the student matriculates and enrolls in classes at St. John Fisher University.
  • Every student must complete a minimum of 30 credits and half of the courses in their major in residence at the university.
  • The maximum number of credits that can be transferred from any combination of associate degree and/or proprietary school study, Advanced Placement, CLEP, and other approved settings is 66 credit hours or its equivalent.
  • The University guarantees transfer of a minimum of 60 semester credit hours to applicants holding an AA, AS, or AAS degree from a fully accredited college. Normally the university does not transfer courses with grades below C; however, this policy could possibly be waived to ensure that associate degree holders receive the minimum 60 credits in transfer. Note: The associate degree must be complete before enrolling at Fisher.
  • Evaluation of transfer credit will be done only from an official transcript sent directly from the Registrar’s Office at the previous institution. Current students should have the transcripts sent to Fisher’s Registrar.
